VISION
Of the world’s 8.23 billion people, approximately 5.41 billion—about 65%—now use social media. In countries like the U.S., teens alone account for roughly 33% of all internet traffic. As digital media continues to expand its reach, statistics around social media literacy paint a concerning picture. A UNESCO survey of over 500 content creators across 45 countries found that 62% do not conduct any form of rigorous fact-checking before posting content (UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay). In the U.S., another study showed that nearly 40% of adults failed basic questions related to digital literacy, such as identifying cookies or understanding data tracking
What was once a medium for communication or commerce has evolved into a powerful force—one that now shapes how we interpret world events, understand others, and see ourselves. While we cannot control what others post online, we can manage how we engage with it. Yet, the tools traditionally used to teach media literacy are rapidly becoming outdated in the face of social media’s shifting, algorithm-driven landscape.
Our Goal
TrustmeBro does not aim isn’t to provide sweeping solutions, but to provide something smaller: clear insights, consistent methods, and a way of thinking that grows more intuitive over time. With enough exposure, these tools become second nature—not as rules to follow, but as patterns to recognize. The goal is simply to make understanding the media we consume a little easier, and a little sharper.

OUR METRICS
In order to keep our assessment of different social media trends standardized among different topics, writers, or creators - we’ve developed a holistic metric system to be used in each evaluation. Each trend we cover is analyzed for its audience impact, gauging how widely it resonates and why; source credibility, assessing where information originates and how trustworthy it is; emotional framing, unpacking the psychological and rhetorical strategies used to evoke responses; cognitive bias, identifying the subconscious tendencies content may exploit in viewers; and algorithmic susceptibility, examining how likely a piece of media is to be amplified or suppressed by platform algorithms. Together these metrics give a simplistic and accessible framework for our writers, but can also serve as a baseline “toolkit” for anyone looking to develop their sense of social media literacy. It is important to note that while we believe this metric system to be holistic and adequate when evaluating most media users may come across - the rapidly evolving landscape of modern media makes it impossible to fully encompass all nuances which social media or any internet content may present.
